Academic Coaching

Facilitator: Lyn Benn, Director of Student Success at Kwantlen

This intensive training will develop your ability to help students learn how to be efficient, confident, motivated, and successful learners in all their subjects. Often confused with tutoring or counseling, academic coaching has been proven to increase retention and academic success rates among college students (Bettinger & Baker, 2011). Topics covered in this training include the first meeting, assessment, coaching plans, facilitative vs. directive approaches, establishing learning partnerships, intervention techniques, motivational and emotional control mechanisms, goal setting strategies and long term goal setting, and understanding emotional intelligence and cultural competence. This training utilizes the Academic Coaching Workbook from Crossroads of Learning, which is provided to all participants, a $19.95 value. This curriculum has been used at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and was developed with input from the instructor for this training, Lyn Benn, Director of Student Success at Kwantlen.
