10:45-11:00 Coffee Break
11:00-12:00 Session 2: How Do We Encourage Students to Self-Regulate? A Workshop Designed to Support Student Learning in First-Year Computing Science and Engineering (Diana Cukierman, Sheryl Guloy, and Donna McGee Thompson, Simon Fraser University). The presenters will describe a workshop they developed as a new component of the Academic Enhancement Program (AEP), at Simon Fraser University (SFU). The AEP is a program that supports the learning of first-year Computing Science (CS) and Engineering Science (ES) students at SFU, by integrating activities into core CS and ES courses that introduce students to effective learning strategies . To inform their development of the workshop, the AEP team conducted a needs assessment to learn about the challenges students in first-year CS and ES courses were facing, by interviewing course instructors and surveying first-year students in both disciplines. In this session they will summarize their initial findings from the needs assessment and describe the workshop on self-regulated learning strategies that emerged as a result.
12:00-1:00 Lunch
1:00-2:00 Session 3: Peer Coaching at KPU and Beyond (Alice Macpherson and Marti Alger, Kwantlen Polytechnic University). Alice will present on Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Peer Coaching program that focuses on process – rather than product – to help coachees build their study skills. KPU uses an Objectives and Outcomes approach to match Peer Coach development with the identified areas where students can use support from fellow students. This is a chance for outstanding students to begin their professional development as a Peer Coach as they step into a new role that will see them continuously improve coaching skills and knowledge of learning strategies. Supervisors from the KPU Learning Centres train and mentor the new Peer Coach to use specific strategies at the different stages of the coaching process and to help their coachees analyze their own strengths and learning needs in order to select the most appropriate area(s) to work on. Supervisors also work to identify ways that the Peer Coach is building expertise and developing their personal scholarship.
2:00-2:10 Short break
2:10-3:30 Session 4: Mindfulness: A Path to Well-Being (Sukhi Sohi, Capilano University). In this workshop, we will explore the many benefits of practicing mindfulness. A growing body of research shows that mindfulness meditation helps to reduce stress, anxiety and depression and enhances our capacity to experience happiness, clarity and peace. Participants will have an opportunity to learn and practice mindfulness meditation during the session.
