Indigenous scholar and Land-based educator Garrison McCleary will presenting on how learning specialists can facilitate connection with Land for student well being, particularly for those who live in the urban setting. About Garrison McCleary:
Garrison McCleary is an Indigenous social worker, college professor, and Land-based educator of mixed ancestry (Lenape, African-Canadian, and British). He has over ten years of experience in Land-based education, working for the Grand River Conservation Authority, the Waterloo Region District School Board, Conestoga College, and White Owl Native Ancestry Association. Garrison holds a Master of Social Work - Indigenous Field of Study degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Social Development Studies from the University of Waterloo. He is set to begin his doctoral studies in social work at Wilfrid Laurier University in September 2020.
In his current capacity as the Coordinator of Land-based Education and Programming at White Owl Native Ancestry Association, Garrison has developed, in collaboration with community partners, unique Land-based programming that is offered through the Waterloo Region District School Board. These program focus on walking towards mino bimaadiziwin (the good life), through the resurgence of Land-based relationship and practice with youth.
